A few tips when setting up a new business.

Creating a new company is exciting but with so much information readily available at our finger tips and so much to think about, it can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Here’s some tips for small businesses when planning marketing activity.

Thoroughly research your market

Understanding what your competitors are doing as well as researching successful companies in other parts of the world can be a really useful way of understanding what works and what doesn’t.

By researching your market thoroughly, you can keep ahead of any big changes coming down the line (e.g. think Blockbuster videos and Netflix!) and stay ahead of the game.

How acquainted are you with your target audience?

In marketing, we often create personas of ideal customers, to help guide our thinking, understand who they are e.g. their demographic, what their hobbies and interests are etc.

This helps provide clarity on what marketing activity will resonate with them, depending on their needs and habits, ensuring you’re spending time on the right messaging, in the right place to the right person.

Find your niche

The world of online shopping is making it increasingly challenging to stand out from the crowd, so finding a niche helps you differentiate how you differ from competitors, and helps ensure your customers come back for more.

    Think about your brand

A brand is the basically personality of your business.  It’s the first thing a customer thinks or feels when they interact with you, so getting this right is really important.

If you have core values which are important to your business, make sure all your marketing activity and messaging is aligned to them, and don’t deviate from it.

Fluffier stuff includes what you see visually e.g. do certain colours spring to mind or are there particular images, fonts or existing logos that you’ve seen that you like?  Consistency is important when it comes to brand, so it’s important to think this through and make sure it’s aligned across all your communications.

      Plan your marketing

Understanding what your overall business objectives first and foremost is really important, as this then filters down to your marketing objectives and planning.

Create content that emphasises your unique selling points and the benefits to consumers of using your business. Consider all the marketing mix including social, advertising, PR and events, finding a combination which works for you and your company.

Choose a name, domain and set up your website

This is a blog post in itself!  These three things are closely linked, as your company name needs to have a strong domain available to set up your website.

It might sound really obvious, but it’s really important to keep in mind the overall aim and objective of your website when building it as it’s easy to go off on a tangent.  List 5 aims you want from the website which will help focus your thinking and avoid things going off the beaten track.

Take your time when picking a domain name, thoroughly researching the market to ensure it’s memorable and not too common, and don’t be afraid to test the name with friends and family.  It’s important to pick a name which is easy to remember and easy to spell, as well as selecting something which can grow with you as your business and services evolve.

          Networking

When you’re setting up a company for the first time,  networking can be incredibly useful, as there’s so many people out there who have been through similar experiences and can offer useful tips and recommendations.

Networking can also be a great way to make valuable connections or even future customers.
